Exercise Physiology

Exercise Physiology is an active rather than passive form of treatment. As our patient you will experience physiological adaptations to varying levels of graded physical activity.

You will be require to effectively implement prescribed exercises for your specific situation, in an environment that promote the restoration of your physical function. This may be in the form of a gym / fitness centre, your home or even your workplace.

Why do you need Exercise Physiology treatment?

Exercise PhysiologistsIt is critical that you receive the right treatment as soon as you sustain an injury, as this may dictate the challenges that you may face in your recovery.

Unfortunately for many patients, musculoskeletal injuries are often mismanaged and lack the direction of an effective treatment plan.

Too often I hear of patients who remain tied to a passive treatment program with little to no improvement, being advised to take a “wait and see” approach that effectively reduces their chance of recovery with every week that passes by.

“We find that patients who participate in our Exercise Physiology treatment programs recover much more quickly to their normal lifestyle faster; if they come to us in the first 6-12 weeks after their injury.”

When should you start Exercise Physiology treatment?

Your Nominated Treating Doctor has the responsibility to refer you to receive the most appropriate treatment for your condition. However it is also your responsibility to provide useful feedback to your doctor to indicate how effective this treatment has been for you; and where necessary, challenge its appropriateness… particularly when there is little or no improvement.

Typically your doctor will refer you for physiotherapy treatment to manage the acute phase of your injury and prepare you for the progression to Exercise Physiology based treatment.

Exercise PhysiologyBut it is not uncommon for a patient’s recovery to stall at this point, with the resultant progression to Exercise Physiology based treatment not forthcoming.

Instead the patient continues with passive treatment that becomes excessive and ineffective.

If you find that you recovery is taking longer than expected and your current treatment is no longer resulting in significant improvements, then it is time to rethink your treatment strategy and consider getting an Exercise Physiologist involved.

If you are still having passive forms of treatment (such as physiotherapy, massage therapy and chiropractic treatment) after 6-12 weeks without significant improvement, then you should seriously reconsider your current rehabilitation treatment plan because it may not be working for your situation.

Why you should work with us…

Before we start working with you, we recommend that you Request A Call Back from one of our Program Managers to discuss your specific situation, to determine whether Exercise Physiology based treatment is the best way forward to facilitate your recovery.

But if you are looking for a specific reasons why you should work with us…then look no further!

Your tailor-made solution!

When we work with our patients, we are extremely mindful that everyone has a situation that is unique to them; and this same rule applies to you.

This is why we do not believe in offering a “cookie cutter” type of “one-size fits all” treatment program, they simply don’t work for everyone.

We understand your pain.

We understand that you are the only person who truly understands your pain and what you are going through.

As health professionals, we use specific techniques that allow us to sight visual cues and behaviours that are key indicators of pain; and draw upon our experience of working with hundreds of other patients with situations similar to yours, to assist your recovery.

But at the end of the day, we are only with you as our patient for the duration of the treatment session. You are the person who experiences the pain symptoms, not us. We realise that this may sometimes continue for long after the session is completed; but with continued treatment, the frequency of this occurring is expected to decrease.

Unfortunately I have heard some horror stories where before coming to us, patients have been pushed beyond their physical limitations and pain thresholds with the therapist citing a “no pain, no gain” mentality. This subsequently aggravated the patient’s injury and delayed their recover in some cases for more than six months

Believe me, this is not the way that treatment should be delivered for patients with musculoskeletal injuries and it is definitely not one that we practice in our business.

You have our 100% Attention

Exercise Physiologist SydneyWe are mindful of your physical limitations when prescribing exercises for you to perform. So during treatment sessions, we provide you with demonstrations of prescribed exercises that highlight how to perform them safely with correct technique.

We will be constantly engaging with you to communicate adjustments to your technique whilst monitoring your current level of pain so we know where you are at, at any given time.

We do this because we simply do not want you to be bedridden for days after seeing us and negate the benefits of our treatments due to inactivity.

Should you work with us, your Exercise Physiology treatment program will be designed specifically for your individual needs and will be conducted 1-on-1 with your Exercise Physiologist, where you will receive 100% attention to maximise your chance of recovery.

We plan your Recovery

When we treat our Exercise Physiology patients, it is always our goal to facilitate the functional improvements necessary to progress them towards the self management of their injuries.

This is ultimately where we provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to self manage your injury; and be able to effectively implement strategies that prevent injury aggravations from occurring.

Plus…we understand that you cannot rely upon us forever!

You will need to be able to self manage your injury at some point, so you can lead the quality of life that you deserve without the fear of an injury occurring.

So we make sure that we prepare you for that…
