I am sure you like everybody else that I know, has been in pain on many occasions throughout the course of your life. Unfortunately the term pain itself has been paired with a negative context, as what it really does is actually quite positive and helpful. It is what helps us learn the limitations of our bodies.
Managing your injury related pain can be difficult, frustrating and even quite deflating when you don’t really know what to do. Poor management of an injury can lead to the avoidance of physical activity, a dependence on pain relieving medication and an increased sensitivity to experiencing pain related symptoms.
Did you know that in Australia we have a serious problem, where one (1) in five (5) people have chronic pain?
Most musculoskeletal injuries allow you to recover within a three (3) to six (6) month time frame. So ongoing pain, becomes less about the changes that are occurring structurally within your body but more about what is happening neurologically. This is why we specifically developed our own signature program to help injured workers who suffer from chronic injury related pain.
We deliver this service as a Self Management Activity Program and its purpose is threefold:
- To provide education to you so that you have a better understanding of the different types of pain and what is happening inside your body from a neurological level;
- To take you step by step and teach you to implement effective coping strategies that will assist you to self manage your pain; and
- To improve your functional and physical capacity to allow you to be more active without increasing your symptoms.
We also conducted a research study during the pilot phase of this program (completed in late 2011) on its effectiveness and achieved some fantastic results that we are proud of. If you would like to read more about these results you can check them out here.
Further to this, there is more information about this service that you can check out on our services page. Or if you would like to know how you can have Fitco Health Technologies become involved in the management of your chronic pain and teach you how to effectively self manage, simply contact us to make an appointment.
P.S. I recently came across this video that gives a great visual overview of how you should perceive and manage the pain in your life. It really supports what we aim to achieve in our Self Management Activity Programs.
